Designed to Enhance the Student Experience

Over the years, Master Carlos Gracie Jr. has developed and adapted several teaching methods designed to enhance the students learning experience. On this page you will find a list of all these teaching methods and in some cases a link to a more detailed explanation of it.

The Gracie Barra Attendance Cards

Each Gracie Barra student must have an attendance card stored at his or her home school. The card must be used when student comes for class and is a great tool for the instructor to evaluate attendance and eligibility for promotion. For more information about the GB Attendance Cards click here.

The Gracie Barra Belt System

The Gracie Barra Belt System and the Philosophy of Master Carlos Gracie Jr. on students promotion are one of the corner stones of the learning experience at our schools. To learn more about it Click here.

The Gracie Barra Warm Up and Cool Down

A common set of exercises that are easy to learn and help prevent injuries have been combined in a short warm up that help students get set for other parts of the class. Class Messages

Messages delivered by the instructor during the class that are not related to the techniques are a very important part of the students experience. Each instructor must plan ahead to talk about important subjects related to the Gracie Barra and Jiu-Jitsu lifestyle. For more information about this important teaching method, click here

Demonstration Script

Gracie Barra instructors must seek consistency not only on the technique being taught, but also how the technique is delivered. To help accomplish this, the GB Demonstration Script provides a framework upon each instructors can develop their teaching styles. To learn more about this important teaching method click here

Line Up Method

One of the most important differentiating factors of the Gracie Barra teaching methods from other Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu school is the structure and organization. This goes to many different elements of the GB systems but is also reflected on the way space is used before, during and after class. Training Methods

The training methods used for the practice of Jiu-Jitsu are an essential part of the students learning experience at Gracie Barra. Pair Up Method

Pairing up students is an art and says a lot about the culture of our schools and can make a difference between a great or a bad experience. Instructors must constantly strive to develop great training partners and pair up students the best way possible to enhance safety and the overall training experience of the group. Teaching Commands

One of the best skills of great instructors is the ability to take control of a group class by giving attention to every individual student while keeping the team focused and challenged. In order to be able to control group behavior, many instructors rely on standard teaching commands that individuals can interpret and respond automatically. Teaching Concepts
